Quick Visit

I had 45 minutes between swimming and meeting a friend for coffee this morning, so I took a quick walk to Shelly Beach via the Imperial Recreation ground. It was grey and drizzling.

Of note were 3 Red-Breasted Mergansers (2f, 1m) off the Imperial recreation ground, a Chiffchaff there, too, in the weeds by the children's playground. I didn't see the Cirl Buntings, but I think they were present and calling (I was in a rush!).


From Shelly Beach, 5 Cormorants were fishing in a group, and the Great Northern Diver was still present in the same small area between the buoys.

Tobago Holiday 2024

  At Easter 2024, Siân and I spent two weeks on holiday on the Caribbean island of Tobago (27 th March to 9 th April). Although not specifically a birding trip, I did spend some of the holiday exploring the area local to our hotel in South-West Tobago and a day in the central Main Ridge Rainforest Reserve. I also spent half a day on the island of Little Tobago at the North-East end of the main island, a protected seabird reserve. I am not a photographer, so the images accompanying this blog are essentially ‘record shots’ of some of the birds I encountered using my Nikon B700 bridge camera. Costa Rica 2026

In January 2026, Siân and I went on holiday to Costa Rica. The trip was a combination of travel and a beach holiday. When planning our trip with a company called Tribes, we specified that we wanted to see some wildlife, particularly animals and birds, and that we wanted to travel from the Caribbean coast to the Pacific coast via the highlands. We were in the county for two weeks and had a hired SUV for all that time. I am not a photographer, so the images accompanying this blog are essentially ‘record shots’ of some of the birds and animals we encountered, taken with my Nikon B700 bridge camera. However, I found photographing birds in Costa Rica quite frustrating. We saw many species at dawn or dusk, when the light was not ideal, and we also saw many species in the rainforest, where it is dark, or the birds are high in the trees. End of January

Today was a walk down from home and along the estuary to Shelly Beach as the tide was falling. Here is an obliging Wren seen on the way through the top of town. Two Great Spotted Woodpeckers were active in the mature trees between the 'wibbly wobbly' path and Lympstone Manor, chasing each other around and drumming. There were 9+ Great Crested Grebe out on the estuary along with Brent Geese , Wigeon and a small group of Pintail . At Mudbank, there was a flock of 20+ Turnstone , Oystercatchers , a few Redshank and this Greenshank . In the brook were Grey Wagtail , a couple of Mute Swans and two Redshank . There was a lone female Red Breasted Merganser at some distance out from the Duckpond area of the estuary. There was the usual mix of Turnstone , Oystercatcher and Brent Geese in the corner of the Duckpond plus one Dunlin . There are still four Cirl Buntings on the Imperial recreation ground.
