Swallows & Wheaters

I visited Orcombe today (via Gore Lane) to catch up on the spring birds I missed while out of the country!

Two Wheatear were seen today, one in the cattle field and the other at the top of a tree on the cliffs (see image).

Other birds seen were 2 Swallow hawking over the dung field crops, 3+ Skylark singing, two Shelduck and 2 Mallard in the cattle field. 3+ Chiffchaff were in song in the hedgerows and cliff bushes. A Blackcap was singing in the bushes by the WWII lookout, 5+ vocal Great Black-backed Gull patrolling over the cliffs. A pair of Peregrine Falcon were displaying over the cliffs.

A New Year and a Blog!

  So, I woke up at 8 am on 1st January 2024 after getting to bed at about 2 am, having consumed 'a few beers'. As I lay in bed contemplating if today was the day that I would start my birding/wildlife blog, I heard a Green Woodpecker calling from outside. Was it laughing at me? Probably not, but that spurred me into action, and I was up and out of the house just after nine. I decided to walk from home to the estuary and head towards the seafront via Mudbank and the Imperial Recreation Ground. It was good to hear two Song Thrush singing in the trees that line the 'wibbly-wobbly' path between Lympstone Manor and Lower Halsdon Farm. Unfortunately, the dull day was not ideal for photography, but here is one of the plucky songsters... The taller trees nearer the marshy area by the cycle path held a large and noisy flock of 100+ Redwing and a few  Goldfinches , Greenfinches and Chaffinches. Tobago Holiday 2024

  At Easter 2024, Siân and I spent two weeks on holiday on the Caribbean island of Tobago (27 th March to 9 th April). Although not specifically a birding trip, I did spend some of the holiday exploring the area local to our hotel in South-West Tobago and a day in the central Main Ridge Rainforest Reserve. I also spent half a day on the island of Little Tobago at the North-East end of the main island, a protected seabird reserve. I am not a photographer, so the images accompanying this blog are essentially ‘record shots’ of some of the birds I encountered using my Nikon B700 bridge camera. Some birds were very obliging; others were far trickier to get images of! I always try to leave the birds undisturbed and let them come to me. Grey Plover & colourful Kingfishers

Now I have retired from full-time work and have the precious resource of time to play with, the point of doing this blog is to get me out and about birding regularly, to get me to take the time to look (have a 'proper gander') at the world around me.  ' What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare'  (H. Davis, 1911) . Today was another beautiful winter's morning, so I decided to head out and see where I ended up! I took my usual route down to the estuary. There were about 40 Rooks on the field by the 'wibbly-wobbly' path, most paired up and getting ready to breed. A Chiffchaff was calling in the hedge on the road between Lower Halsdon farm and Mudbank, but too elusive for a photo! Practically the first bird I saw on reaching Mudbank was this female Kingfisher (below) on the wall by the train bridge.
